Hampshire and Lancashire played out a thrilling final in the T20 Blast on Sunday (July 17) at Edgbaston. Hampshire held their nerve in the end to win the last-ball thriller by just one run. However, there was a lot of drama involved on the last ball with the fast bowler Nathan Ellis delivering a no-ball and not being aware of the umpire’s call, everyone began to celebrate only for it to halt, albeit temporarily.

Having pulled things back nicely in the death overs, Hampshire had five runs to defend on the last ball. Ellis had bowled a terrific over until then and castled the batter off the final delivery for the celebrations to start. Even the crowd was ecstatic and the commentators also announced that Hampshire were crowned champions and the scorecard also showed the same. All the celebrations were over the top and even the firecrackers were burst to celebrate the champions.

Unfortunately, all the celebrations came to a halt when the umpires adjudged it to be a no-ball and the Hampshire players couldn’t believe it. The batters had run a single as well which meant Lancashire now needed only three runs off a free-hit final ball of the innings to win the trophy. Moreover, the teams had to wait to deliver the final ball as there was a lot of smoke on the ground thanks to the firecrackers that were burst.

Ellis keeps his nerves

Nathan Ellis though kept his nerves intact to deliver a brilliant slower delivery which the batter couldn’t connect to and they could only scamper through for a bye. Interestingly, Lancashire needed only two runs to win the tournament as a tie would’ve sufficed for them having scored more runs in the powerplay. In T20 Blast, according to the rules, if a match ends in a tie, a winner is determined by the number of wickets lost. If the sides are equal in that aspect, then the powerplay runs separate them.

Lancashire had scored 60 runs in the powerplay compared to Hampshire’s 48. But all those calculations weren’t needed as Nathan Ellis delivered a legal ball to seal the trophy for Hampshire which also turned out to be seventh successive win, sixth while defending a total this season. However, after the victory, no Hampshire celebrated and they just shook hands before walking off the field.

Somerset completely thrashed their opponents Derbyshire during the fourth quarter-final match of the 2022 T20 Blast played at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton on July 9 (Saturday). The winning team also went on to register the highest total in the T20 Blast after smashing 265 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

For Derbyshire, leg-spinner Mattie McKiernan had a very bad outing as the bowler went on to register the most expensive four-over spell in T20 cricket history after giving away a massive 82 runs in his four-over quota and bowling at an economy rate of 20.5. The 28-year-old also failed to scalp any wickets for his side as he got punished by the Somerset batters.

The leg-spinner was taken to the cleaners by former South Africa batter Rilee Rossouw as the left-handed batter smashed McKiernan for 34 runs in an over. The 28-year-old looked clueless in his bowling as he did not get his line and length right and ended up giving away 82 runs in his four-over quota.

Talking more about the match, Derbyshire won the toss and opted to have a bowl first. Somerset batters came all guns blazing as openers Tom Banton and Will Smeed gave a perfect start to their team. After Smeed fell, Banton was joined by Rossouw as both of them thrashed the Derbyshire bowling line-up.

While Banton scored 73 runs in 41 balls, Rossouw smacked 93 runs off just 36 deliveries including eight fours and seven maximums. Talking about the dismissal, the wicketkeeper-batter Salt swept leg-spinner, Matt Critchley near the mid-wicket boundary, and Pepper who was stationed near the ropes timed his jump excellently and clinched a brilliant catch. The latter lost his balance but somehow managed to throw the ball in time to Ben Allison who completed an easy catch. Several people debated if Pepper’s foot had touched the boundary rope, but the umpire gave the decision in the fielding side’s favour and Salt went back after scoring 27 off 21 balls.

Talking about the match, Essex won the toss and opted to bat first. Every Essex batter got a decent start to their innings but none of them managed to play a big knock. Pepper also was the highest scorer for his team after stroking 36 runs off 28 balls. For Lancashire, pacer Luke Wood was the pick of the bowlers as he scalped two wickets for his side and gave away just 28 runs in his four-over quota.

In reply, Lancashire lost opener Keaton Jennings in the first over of the chase. However, Salt and Croft played excellent knocks and bailed out their team from a tricky situation. The organizers of England’s T20 Blast have found a creative way to kick start a match, as the match ball for the first quarterfinal between Yorkshire and Surrey arrived at the ground with a remote-controlled car to get the match going. And what followed on the field was a last-ball thriller between the two teams as Yorkshire snatched the win by only 1 run.

Jordan Thompson defends five runs of the last over

Surrey’s chase began shakily as they lost their skipper, Will Jacks, in the last ball of the first over for only 1 run. Opener Rory Burns scored 28 runs off 27 balls before being bowled by leg-spinner Shadab Khan in the ninth over. Shadab also scalped the wicket of Ollie Pope, at number four, for only 11 runs off 8 balls. Tom Curran, coming in at number three, scored 36 runs off 28 balls and was dismissed in the 13th over by Willey.

Laurie Evans came in at number five and stayed unbeaten on 35 runs off 26 balls, and his partnership of 67 runs with Jamie Overton brought Surrey close to a famous victory. With these two settled batters on the crease, they only needed five runs in the last over. The medium-fast bowler Jordan Thompson had the ball for the 20th over, and in the first three balls, the two batters scored one run each. 

In the fourth ball, Overton was run out, after scoring a well-made 40 runs off 21 balls. Sunil Narine, who came in next to bat with three runs still required, was out on the first ball that he faced. Atkinson faced the last ball and Surrey could only sneak one run off a leg-bye. Thompson held the nerve in the last over and guided Yorkshire to the semifinals.

The second quarterfinal of the T20 Blast is set to take place between Hampshire, led by James Vince, and Warwickshire, led by Carlos Brathwaite, on Thursday.
