Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra created history once again on July 24, when he won the silver medal in Javelin Throw finals of the World Athletic Championship in Oregon, United States. He became just the second Indian and the first male track and field athlete to achieve the feat. Anju Booby George, a renowned long jumper, was the first Indian to take home a medal (bronze), at the 2003 World Championships, which was in Pari.

Meanwhile, Chopra’s silver finally ended India’s 19-year drought for a medal at the world championships. The Indian cricket community reacted to his achievement on Twitter and lauded the young talent. Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, and Mithali Raj were a few among the many who hailed Chopra.

Chopra jumped to second place from seventh with an 88.13 meters throw

After starting off the finals with a foul throw, Chopra threw 82.39 and 86.37 meters to finish fourth at the end of three rounds. He regained his rhythm with a strong throw in the fourth round and marked it at 88.13 meters, his fourth career-best effort, which propelled him to the second place. He retained his place till the end as his fifth and sixth throws were declared foul.

Chopra qualified for the finals of the world event earlier this week with a throw of 88.39 meters in his first-ever attempt in the group stage. Anderson Peters, the defending champion, of Grenada claimed the gold with a best throw of 90.54 meters, while Jakub Vadlejch, the Czech Republic’s Olympic silver medalist, took the bronze with a throw of 88.09 meters.

A nation of billions that was not used to see its athletes dominate at track and field events has become accustomed to see success thanks to Neeraj Chopra. The high standards Chopra has set are demonstrated by the fact that some admirers were upset when the 24-year-old missed the gold medal in Eugene, Oregon.

In August, he will represent India in Birmingham to defend his Commonwealth Games crown. It will not be simple since Anderson Peters, who recently left Chopra behind to take the top spot at the World Championships, will be aiming for another Gold. Thus, Chopra may require a throw of 90 meters or more to somewhere confirm a win.

Twitter Reactions: All-rounder Axar Patel goes berserk as India seal series against West Indies https://www.crictracker.com/twitter-reactions-all-rounder-axar-patel-goes-berserk-as-india-seal-series-against-west-indies/ Mon, 25 Jul 2022 03:39:36 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=674631 Akar Patel

Yet another game and yet another thriller between West Indies and India, but there had to be just one winner. After a tough fight from both the teams throughout the contest, the second ODI also ended in a nail-biting thriller. India was one step ahead of the hosts as the Men in Blue clinched the contest by two wickets and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.

While it was a team performance by India during their chase of 312, it was Axar Patel who came out to be the match winner. He went berserk when he walked out to bat and smashed his maiden ODI half-century off just 27 balls. His unbeaten knock of 64 off 35 balls helped India clinch the ODI series and register their highest successful ODI run chase in West Indies.

Along with Patel, Shreyas Iyer (63 off 71) and Sanju Samson (54 off 51) also contributed significantly to India’s win, although they were dismissed at critical junctures that allowed West Indies to reclaim control in the match. The 28-year-old, though, just stole the show and enabled India to win another ODI series on the Caribbean soil.

India got off to a solid start in the chase thanks to a 48-run partnership between Shubman Gill and captain Shikhar Dhawan. The play was temporarily halted by rain and soon after the resumtion, Dhawan perished for a 31-ball 13. Gill, however, (43 off 49) appeared fluid throughout his time in the middle yet again.

In an attempt to take down Kyle Mayers, he attempted to play the ramp stroke, but the ball struck the bat’s toe end and rebounded to Mayers, who took a simple catch and sent Gill walking back. Suryakumar Yadav also failed to fire this time. When things weren’t going well for India’s chase, Iyer and Samson had an important 99-run stand that helped the team get back on track.

Notably, Deepak Hooda also scored a handy 33 and shared a 51-run partnership with Axar. However, fall of some quick wickets kept West Indies intrested. Unfortunately for the hosts, Axar became the party spoiler as India crossed the line with a couple of deliveries to spare.

Shai Hope’s brilliant century in vain

Earlier in the game, West Indies opener Shai Hope smashed a magnificent ton to keep his side in a commanding position. Hope displayed class with a brilliant century and West Indies’ captain Nicholas Pooran (74 off 77) embarked on a six-hitting rampage as they put together a strong batting performance. Hope focused on developing partnerships and detonated towards the end of his 135-ball 115 run knock.

He smashed three sixes and eight fours during his time with the bat. Top-order batters Mayers (39 off 23) and Shamarh Brooks (35 off 36)  also displayed a fine game as India kept striving for wickets. Hope and Pooran’s partnership was ended by Shardul Thakur who scalped the latter, and the all-rounders could not contribute much towards the end, as a result of which West Indies batters finished at 311/6.

Meanwhile, here’s how Twitter reacted to India’s triumph:

‘Thinking about his 100 and not team’ – Fans give mixed reactions on Shai Hope’s century at Queen’s Park Oval https://www.crictracker.com/thinking-about-his-100-and-not-team-fans-give-mixed-reactions-on-shai-hopes-century-at-queens-park-oval/ Sun, 24 Jul 2022 17:35:26 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=674586 Shai Hope celebration after his century

West Indies’ opening batter Shai Hope scored his 13th ODI century during the first innings of the second ODI against India in Trinidad on Sunday, 24th of July. The elegant opening batter reached the three-figure mark with a magnificent six on his 100th appearance in the 50-over format, which made his innings extra special, and in the process became the 10th batter to score a century in his 100th ODI.

Earlier, West Indian skipper Nicholas Pooran rectified his mistake of bowling first in the opening match of the three-match ODI series and decided to bat first in the second ODI after winning the toss. The decision proved to be a masterstroke as the hosts posted a great total on the board with Hope pitching in with 115 runs.

The West Indian batters were quite severe on Indian pacer Avesh Khan, who was making his ODI debut in the match. The hosts were in a bit of trouble after losing Shamarh Brooks and Brandon King in quick succession, but skipper Nicholas Pooran and his deputy Shai Hope consolidated things with a 117-run stand for the fourth wicket.

The Barbados-born cricketer is often criticized for his slow scoring rate in white-ball cricket, but he has an exceptional record in ODIs, averaging almost 50 in 100 matches for the WI. He holds the key for the hosts as they finished with 311 runs after losing six wickets.

Mohammed Siraj came to the rescue for the Indian team in the first ODI

India managed to win the series opener thrillingly as Dhawan’s bowlers held their nerve in the death overs to survive a late scare. The Indian batters got off to a flying start in the first ODI and looked set to post a total in excess of 350, but the hosts pulled things back nicely in the middle overs as the bowlers chipped away at the wickets at regular intervals to restrict the visitors on a par score of 308/7 in their 50 overs.

The hosts almost got over the line thanks to the belligerence of power-hitting all-rounder Romario Shepherd but fell just short in the final over against a barrage of yorkers from Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj.

Twitter Reactions: Sri Lanka batters put team in commanding position on day one https://www.crictracker.com/twitter-reactions-sri-lanka-batters-put-team-in-commanding-position-on-day-one/ Sun, 24 Jul 2022 13:01:13 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=674449 Dinesh Chandimal

The first day of the second Test match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan saw the hosts showcasing a spirited performance on an otherwise eventful day that saw them post well in excess of 300 runs on the board. While the Pakistani bowlers showed great enthusiasm in accounting for more than half of the Lankan side, they failed to contain their middle-order in the last half-an-hour of the day’s play.

Sri Lanka have wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella to thank as his vital knock ensured that the hosts did not suffer any further damage and he single-handedly took the attack on the Pakistani bowlers. Dickwella found good support in Dunith Wellalage (6*) who showed great determination in holding on to the other end firmly like a rock.

Sri Lanka dominate on the first day

Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and elected to bat first. The hosts got off to a good start with Karunaratne and Oshada Fernando adding 92 runs for the opening stand before the latter was dismissed for 50. Karunaratne scored 40 and looked to rebuild the innings along with Angelo Mathews before he was dismissed.

When Mathews was sent back for a well-made 42, Sri Lanka were in a spot of bother at 195/4 before the middle-order duo of Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva carried out the rescue act adding 63 runs for the fifth-wicket stand. Chandimal showcased yet another consistence performance scoring 80 runs off 137 balls and found good support in Dhananjaya who contributed with 33.

When the duo was dismissed, it opened up the floodgates for the visitors to make a comeback, but before they could rattle the rest of the batting lineup, Niroshan Dickwella challenged them and ensured that the Lankans lost no more wickets for the rest of the day. He and Dunith Wellalage made the Pakistani bowlers toil hard for wickets. While Dickwella played some smart cricket and also attacked when the situation demanded, Dunith showcased his defensive abilities by refusing to allow the bowlers to breach his defense. Sri Lanka’s scorecard read 315/6 at stumps with Niroshan Dickwella unbeaten on 42.

Yuzvendra Chahal has had a terrific journey not just in international cricket, but also in the Indian Premier League. The Indian spin maestro, who turned 32 on Saturday (July 23), has been a crucial member of the setup off-late. He impressed everyone at the IPL this year while playing for the Rajasthan Royals, and reserved his spot on the Indian team.

India‘s top leg-spinner, Chahal even represented his country at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. He established a strong foundation for India’s bowling unit and developed a perfect camaraderie with Kuldeep Yadav both on and off the field. The pair steered the Men in Blue to remarkable triumphs in limited-overs games everywhere across the world.

Chahal has additionally distinguished himself as one of the team’s most endearing players. Fans and his friends alike are pleased with his social media antics. His antics on Chahal TV and his social media craze are known by one and all. As part of the Rajasthan Royals’ setup, Chahal had a gala time on social media during the IPL and kept the fans entertained throughout.

The spinner, fondly known as Yuzi, has 113 wickets in 65 ODIs at an economy rate of 5.19 and 79 wickets in 62 T20Is at an economy rate of 8 as he remains eager to produce more. He was the leading wicket-taker at the IPL this year and ended his stint with 27 wickets under his belt. With an aim to make his way into India’s T20 World Cup squad, Chahal has been giving his best in the white-ball format.

Yuzvendra Chahal- A chess maestro turned into a spin wizard

Despite being a prominent cricket player, Yuzvendra Chahal would not lose anything by switching to chess. The 32-year-old has represented India at the Youth Championships while playing chess from 1997 to 2003. He also won the U-11 title. His interest in chess is still active, and the spinner would surely have another game to excel in the future.

Chahal is the only Indian bowler with a six-wicket haul in both ODIs (6/42) and T20Is (6/25), and both figures notably are his career-best figures in the respective formats. He is currently a part of the Indian squad that is touring the West Indies for a bilateral series. Chahal scalped two wickets in the ODI series opener on Friday and provided his side with the crucial wickets in the time of need.

Here’s how Twitter wished Yuzvendra Chahal:

After losing the series opener, Team England made a roaring comeback in the second ODI against South Africa and won the match by a huge margin of 118 runs. All-rounder Sam Curran was adjudged the Player of the Match for his vital contribution with both bat and ball.

At first, the match was delayed for a long period due to rain. After the rain stopped, the match was set to start with 29 overs to be bowled per side. South Africa won the toss and invited the Three Lions to have a bat first. English openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow tried to give a quick start to their team, but Roy was scalped in the third over after scoring 14 runs.

Philip Salt and Jonny Bairstow then took England’s total past the 50-run mark. However, the Proteas side made a strong comeback in the match and grabbed quick wickets of Salt, Joe Root, Bairstow, and Moeen Ali as the home team lost their five wickets with just 72 runs on the board in 11.4 overs.

Liam Livingstone was in his destructive best

England skipper Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone then took their team’s total past the 100-run mark, but Buttler departed soon after that. It was Livingstone (38 off 26 balls) and Sam Curran (35 off 18 balls) who provided a flourish of boundaries during the ending phase of their innings. Livingstone also smashed three consecutive sixes on the bowling of Anrich Nortje before getting out.

Some decent contributions from David Willey and Adil Rashid ensured that their team crossed the 200-run mark before getting bowled out inside their allotted 29 overs. For South Africa, Dwaine Pretorius scalped four wickets, followed by Nortje and Shamsi, who scalped two wickets, and skipper Keshav Maharaj also got one wicket.

In reply, South Africa’s batting line-up surrendered, to say the least. Apart from Heinrich Klassen (33 runs), David Miller (12 runs), and Pretorius (17 runs) none of the Proteas batters even managed to reach the double-digit mark as they got all-out for just 83 runs. For England, Reece Topley (two), Willey (one), Curran (one), Adil Rashid (three), and Moeen (two) were the wicket-takers.

Team India went on to win the opening ODI against the home team West Indies on July 22 (Friday) after Mohammed Siraj successfully defended 15 runs in the last over of the match. However, the result could have been different if Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson had not made a full-stretch dive to save a certain boundary in the final over.

As mentioned above, West Indies required 15 runs, with Siraj bowling the last over. The right-arm pacer bowled a dot delivery first up and batters Romario Shepherd, and Akeal Hosein ran a leg-bye on the second ball. With 13 runs required off the last four deliveries, Romario managed to hit a boundary in the third ball of the last over. The duo got another two on the fourth ball of the over.

Sanju Samson made a full stretch dive to save a certain boundary

The second last delivery of the over was bowled way down the leg-side, and Samson showed sheer athleticism, diving to his left and half-stopping the ball. The batting duo on the crease did run a single on that delivery as the ball was called wide by the umpire. West Indies batters could only score three runs on the last two balls as that save by Samson helped India to win the match by three runs.

Talking about the match, India batted first and scored 308/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan scored 97 runs, followed by fifties from Shubman Gill (64), and Shreyas Iyer (54). In reply, batters Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks and Brandon King made some hefty contributions with the bat.

All-rounders Hosein (32 runs), and Romario (39 runs) were also excellent with the bat but could not win the match for their team. For India, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal and Siraj scalped two wickets each and team India has now gained a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

India’s tour of West Indies kick-started with a thrilling encounter between the two in the first ODI of the three-match series. The two teams put up a brilliant show and got every viewer on the edge of their seats in the nail-biting thriller. While both teams put up terrific performances, it was India that emerged victorious as the Men in Blue held their nerves to win the game by mere three runs.

Stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan found a new opening partner in the form of Shubman Gill as the two started off India’s innings on a high note. While Dhawan played a calm and composed knock, Gill was comparatively quicker as the duo shared a 119-run partnership and bagged their respective half-centuries in the game. Gill (64 off 53) was the first one to walk off the field after being run out by Nicholas Pooran.

Shreyas Iyer walked in at No. 3 and shut all the critics with his fierce knock. The vice-captain was a great aid to the captain as the two put up a 94-run stand, taking India to a comfortable position. Just when Dhawan neared his century, and it looked like India would easily cross the 350-run mark, West Indies bowlers bounced back as India faced a mini-collapse.

Dhawan (97 off 99) missed out on a century by mere three runs as Brooks took a brilliant catch to send him packing off Gudakesh Motie’s delivery. Pooran repeated some similar heroic and plucked a stunner to send Iyer (54 off 57) walking. The middle-order batters could not capitalize on the momentum that was set by the top order as Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson and Deepak Hooda failed to fire. A handy cameo by Axar Patel (21 off 21) helped India finish at 308/7. As for the hosts, Alzarri Joseph and Motie were the standout bowlers.

Both teams hold their nerves till the final delivery of the game

Mohammed Siraj got the first breakthrough for India very early as he scalped Shai Hope (7 off 18) in just the fifth over. While that wicket gave India a major boost in their confidence, they did not know what was coming ahead. Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks (46 off 61) kept the game going and shared a 117-run stand for the second wicket before the latter fell prey to Shardul Thakur.

Thakur got another wicket in his next over and dismissed the in-form Mayers (75 off 68). ‘Lord Thakur’, as he is fondly known, finally worked his magic and proved yet again why he stands to that name. Prasidh Krishna endured a tought time against West Indies hitters, as they punished him for multiple boundaries throughout his 10-over spell which kept their scoreboard ticking and the pacer ended up conceding 62 runs without taking a wicket.

Siraj got Nicholas Pooran (25 off 26) and Yuzvendra Chahal picked his first in the form of Rovman Powell as India finally got a ray of hope. Just after Brandon King (54 off 66) got his half-century, Chahal got him off the hook. West Indies still had a trump card in the form of Romario Shepherd (39 off 25), who got to work from the word go. He, alongside Akeal Hosein (32 off 32) brought the game down to the final ball. With the hosts needing a four to tie and a six to win, Siraj conceded just one run off that delivery as India bagged the win.

Twitter Reactions: Fans disheartened as Shikhar Dhawan falls three runs short of splendid ton https://www.crictracker.com/twitter-reactions-fans-disheartened-as-shikhar-dhawan-falls-three-runs-short-of-splendid-ton/ Fri, 22 Jul 2022 16:52:51 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=673764 Shikhar Dhawan

India’s stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan was denied his 18th ODI hundred by just three runs in the ongoing first match against West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on Friday. Dhawan lost the toss to West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran, who invited India to bat first. But it is proving to be a poor decision for the hosts as India are looking strong to put a big total on the scoreboard. India are at 253/5 with Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel on the pitch.

Dhawan is leading the Indian team in the three-match ODI series as regular skipper Rohit Sharma is rested alongside key Indian players. He was part of the recent ODI series against England and started all three matches. But he managed to score only 41 runs and at a poor strike rate of 49.39. But today, he looked totally confident from the start when he smashed two back-to-back fours off Alzarri Joseph in the first over.

India aim for a big total as Shikhar Dhawan departs on 97 runs

The 36-year-old left-handed batter formed a brilliant 119-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill. He played the second fiddle role and allowed Gill to play more freely and aggressively. But after Gill’s unfortunate run-out in the 18th over, Dhawan took charge and gave Iyer time to settle in. He scored his 36th ODI fifty in 53 balls and then formed another big partnership of 94 runs with Iyer.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Dhawan’s innings

He smashed a wonderful swipe-six off in-form spinner Gudakesh Motie to reach closer to a hundred. But Motie brilliantly kept the next delivery far wide and Dhawan went for another big shot and got caught by Sharmarh Brooks. He scored 97 runs off 99 balls with the help of ten fours and three sixes.

Despite losing both Gill, Dhawan, and the middle order, India are looking confident to score considering Hooda’s great form, who is currently playing on six runs (at the time of writing this article).

West Indies are hosting India in the first ODI match at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on Friday, July 22. India’s stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan lost the toss and was forced to bat first on a balanced pitch. The biggest news from the Indian camp is Ravindra Jadeja missed the starting eleven (knee injury) and returning youngster Shubman Gill opened with Dhawan. For West Indies, star all-rounder Jason Holder is also missing the opening clash.

Indian management decided to rest senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for this series. This opened a door for Gill, who last played an ODI match against Australia in 2020. The regular Test batter has represented India in just three ODI matches before and is yet to make a big impact.

The 22-year-old right-handed batter kept out Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad for the opening spot to partner skipper Dhawan. Both Kishan and Gaikwad were heavily involved against South Africa and Ireland after the conclusion of IPL 2022. Kishan has failed to cross the 30-plus mark in the last five overall matches and was likely to be dropped from the first match. Gaikwad was a leading contender to start the opening match after getting ignored for the English tour but Gill’s classy return put the fans in celebration mood. As of now, the youngster is playing on 52 runs (at the time of writing this article).

This is a great opportunity to showcase talent: Shikhar Dhawan

“We wanted to bat second, wicket is sticky and rain is around but we are okay with this. I am a very cool captain, will hope to keep the energy up. Take good decisions and keep the process strong. The bench strength is complementary with the domestic and IPL cricket. This is a great opportunity to showcase talent, show fight, and win the series. Surya, Shreyas, and Samson are all good. Even myself (laughs). We get support here, from abroad and locals which is good,” Shikhar Dhawan said after losing the toss.

Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav have been given a chance to impress in the middle order with Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Hardik Pandya not available. Sanju Samson is donning the gloves for the Men in Blue and in-form all-rounder Deepak Hooda will be playing the finisher’s role. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Jadeja is missing the first two ODI matches with a minor right knee injury.

Axar Patel is given another chance to partner in-form leggie Yuzvendra Chahal to impress with no spin-option available for Team India. Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, and Mohammed Siraj form a pace partnership for India with Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan missing out.
