After loads of twists and turns on Day five, the opening Test between India and New Zealand ended in a draw. Bad light also played a big part in the last session of the final day. The hosts needed to pick one wicket to emerge victorious at the Green Park in Kanpur. But Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel showed a great amount of resilience to make sure that the Black Caps ended the game unscathed.

Latham, Somerville start well

The Kiwis came into the final day, having lost Will Young to Ravi Ashwin at the fag end of the previous day. The visitors had a challenging day ahead of them as they needed 280 runs to win with nine wickets in hand. The onus was on Tom Latham and night-watchman William Somerville to give the Black Caps a good start and they stitched together a priceless 76-run stand for the second wicket.

Somerville scored 36 runs before a short-pitched delivery from Umesh Yadav accounted for his wicket. Ravi Ashwin delivered the body blow as he pinned Latham, who scored a well-made 146-ball 52. Kane Williamson tried to put his head down and see off India’s bowling. He was successful to some extent before Ravindra Jadeja trapped him plumb in front in the final session of the day’s play.

Rachin Ravindra shows nerves of steel

The third and final session was mostly about survival for the New Zealand batters. Scoring runs wasn’t the need of the hour for the Kiwis, staying firm in the middle was. Ross Taylor couldn’t survive for long after Jadeja accounted for his wicket in the 64th over. Henry Nicholls and Tom Blundell perished without making much of an impact. It was then up to the lower order batters to survive.

Rachin Ravindra scored only 18 runs off 91 balls, but showed a lot of character with close-in fielders around him. Kyle Jamieson also played out 30 deliveries to keep India at bay for some time. From there on, Ravindra and Ajaz Patel guided New Zealand to safer shores. The duo played out as many as 52 balls. Jadeja picked up a four-wicket haul, but couldn’t take India over the finish line.

India, on Sunday, November 21, won the third and final match of their T20I series against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma and Co. defeated the Black Caps by 73 runs to complete a clean sweep. At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Men in Blue looked at their very best. After a disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2021, India have been able to make a strong comeback in the T20 format.

Rohit Sharma guides India through

The decision to bat first after winning the toss worked wonders for Team India as they racked up 184 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan laid the platform for the innings with a 69-run stand for the opening wicket off 38 balls. Rohit brought up his second half-century of the series off a mere 27 balls and carried on with his rich vein of form with the bat.

Rohit went on to score 56 before Ish Sodhi dismissed him ‘Caught and Bowled’. Kishan was the more sedate off the two as he got a handy 21-ball 29 with six fours. Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant failed to make much of an impact. Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Harshal Patel and Deepak Chahar’s cameos helped India post a formidable score. Mitchell Santner was the standout Kiwi bowler with three scalps.

Axar Patel comes to the party

The Kiwis scored 21 runs off their first two overs to kick-start their run-chase, but they lost their way since then. Axar Patel wreaked havoc after he got rid of Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips in pretty quick succession. The Black Caps lost half their side when Tim Seifert was run out after scoring 17 off 18. Martin Guptill, at the other hand, looked at his very best in the innings.

He stayed until the 11th over and scored a 36-ball 51 with the help of four fours and as many sixes. But after Yuzvendra Chahal accounted for his wicket, the writing was on the walls for the Kiwis. James Neesham and Mitchell Santner couldn’t make an impact as New Zealand were bowled out for 111 in 17.2 overs. Harshal Patel impressed once again as he picked up two crucial wickets for 26 runs.

India, on Friday, November 19, defeated New Zealand by seven wickets at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. With the win, Rohit Sharma and Co. also took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The third and final game of the series is scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 21. Tim Southee and Co. have nothing, but pride to play for in the last of the three T20Is.

India pull things back after rusty start

The decision to field first after winning the toss backfired on India initially. The Black Caps racked up 64 runs in the powerplay and got off to a flier. Martin Guptill scored a 15-ball 31 before Deepak Chahar removed him. Guptill also went on to leapfrog Virat Kohli as the all-time leading T20I run-scorer. Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman scored 31 and 21 respectively, but couldn’t carry on.

After the first six overs, India made a comeback as the Kiwis could only score 89 runs in their last 14 overs. Glenn Phillips scored a 21-ball 34, but Tim Seifert and James Neesham failed to get going. In fact, Neesham got only three runs off 12 balls before Bhuvneshwar Kumar ended his misery. In the end, the visitors notched 153 for six in 20 overs. Debutant Harshal Patel picked up two wickets.

Rohit, Rahul make hay

India didn’t blaze away in their run-chase and were rather circumspect. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma made sure that the Men in Blue scored 45 runs in the first six overs and didn’t lose a single wicket. The New Zealand bowlers couldn’t make a breakthrough, but didn’t let India get away with the game either. At the hallway stage of their innings, India still didn’t lose a wicket and made 79 useful runs.

Rahul got to his fifty off 40 balls with a massive six off Adam Milne. In the over prior to that, Rohit also smashed Mitchell Santner over the ropes, twice. Rohit and Rahul stepped on the gas and accomplished their 100-run stand off 70 balls. Rahul perished after scoring a 49-ball 65. Soon after, Rohit also got out after a 36-ball 55, but the Indian team chased the target with 2.4 overs left.

The opening T20I between India and New Zealand on Wednesday, November 17, turned out to be a closely-fought affair. In the end, after loads of twists and turns, the Men in Blue won by five wickets with two balls left at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The Black Caps, led by Tim Southee, fought until the very last over, but couldn’t get over the finish line in the humdinger.

Martin Guptill takes charge

After winning the toss and opting to field first, India got off to a stupendous start as Bhuvneshwar Kumar got rid of Daryl Mitchell, who bagged a golden duck. From there on, Mark Chapman and Martin Guptill took charge and helped the Black Caps score 41 runs in the powerplay. The duo carried on and put on a partnership of 109 runs for the second wicket off a mere 12.5 overs.

Chapman notched his maiden half-century for the Kiwis off 45 balls to show his mettle. The southpaw fell prey to Ravi Ashwin, who also sent back Glenn Phillips for a duck. Guptill, at the other end, scored at a run-a-ball for his first 20 balls after which he stepped on the gas. The veteran scored 70 off 42 with three fours and four sixes, helping his team post a formidable score of 164 for six.

Rohit, Suryakumar make hay

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul took India off to a stupendous start as they stitched together a 50-run stand off 5.1 overs. Rahul smashed a four and a six to score 15 before Mitchell Santner accounted for his wicket. India scored 56 runs in the powerplay and brought the required run-rate down to 7.71. At the half-way mark, the Men in Blue found themselves in command, having scored 85 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav joined him and carried on the good work. After a 59-run stand between the duo, Trent Boult dismissed Rohit, who scored 48 off 36 with five fours and two sixes. Yadav, in the meantime, got to his fifty off 34 balls with a six off Lockie Ferguson. He became Boult’s second victim after scoring 62 off 40. Rishabh Pant smashed Mitchell for a four downtown to take India home.

It happened to be their sixth world title after winning five editions of the 50-over World Cup. The Black Caps won five matches in a row, but couldn’t go over the line. They also played three ICC finals on the trot.

Kane Williamson steps up

New Zealand made a cautious start after being put in to bat first. They scored 57 runs in the first 10 overs and also lost the crucial wicket of Daryl Mitchell, who got out to Josh Hazlewood. In the 12th over, Martin Guptill perished to Adam Zampa. Guptill had a tough time in the middle as he made 28 at a strike rate of 80. Kane Williamson, at the other end, played his shots without any inhibitions.

The skipper notched his half-century off 32 balls to inject momentum into the Black Caps’ innings. He was involved in a handy 68-run stand with Glenn Phillips, who scored 18. Williamson went on to score 85 off 48 with 10 fours and three sixes before he fell prey to Hazlewood. James Neesham also played a 13-run cameo as the Kiwis racked up a competitive score of 172 for four on the board.

Australia get home comfortably

The Aussies started their run-chase in a cautious manner, but stepped on the gas later on. They scored 43 runs in the first six overs to lay the platform for the run-chase. Trent Boult got rid of Aaron Finch early and from there on, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh steadied the ship. The duo put on 92 runs for the second wicket off 59 balls. Warner carried on his good form with a fifty off 34 balls.

He went on to score 53 off 38 before Boult rattled his woodwork. Marsh played his shots from the outset and raced away to a half-century off 31 balls. His knock made sure that the Aussies needed 24 runs to win off the last four overs at a run-a-ball. Marsh stayed not out on 77 off 50 with the help of six fours and four sixes. The second semi-final between Pakistan and Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium turned out to be an absolute humdinger. On Thursday, November 11, both teams fought tooth and nail to overpower each other. In the end, it was the Aaron Finch-led Aussies, who won by five wickets with six balls left. Pakistan won five games in a row in the Super 12, but failed to win the knockout game.

Fakhar, Rizwan guide Pakistan

After being put in to bat first, Pakistan got off to a decent start, scoring 47 runs in the powerplay. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan made sure that the Aussies didn’t make early breakthroughs. The duo carried on and stitched together a 71-run stand for the first wicket off 10 overs. Adam Zampa struck first blood, getting rid of Babar, who made 39 runs off 34 balls with five fours.

Rizwan, in the meantime, raced away to yet to another fifty, this time off 41 balls. Fakhar Zaman has strained for form in the mega event, but he found some momentum after hitting a four through third man. Rizwan played a crucial knock of 67 off 52 before Mitchell Starc got rid of him. Fakhar, however, stayed not out on 55 off 32 with three fours and four sixes, taking Pakistan to 176.

Wade, Stoinis hold nerve

Shaheen Shah Afridi removed Aaron Finch as Pakistan started off in a stupendous manner. But David Warner and Mitchell Marsh made sure that Australia scored 52 runs in the powerplay. The duo put on 51 runs before Shadab Khan pinned Marsh, who made a 22-ball 28. Steve Smith couldn’t last long as he became Shadab’s second victim. Warner, at the other end, kept going for the big strokes.

Shadab inflicted the body blow as he nipped out Warner, who scored a 30-ball 49 with three fours and as many sixes. In his next over, the leggie picked up his fourth wicket in the form of Glenn Maxwell. Marcus Stoinis stayed unbeaten on 40 off 31 with two fours and as many sixes. New Zealand have managed to knock favourites England out of the T20 World Cup 2021. On Wednesday, Kane Williamson and Co. defeated the Three Lions by five wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Moeen takes England to a competitive score

After being put in to bat first, England got off to a steady start, scoring 40 runs in the powerplay. Jonny Bairstow couldn’t get going as he got out to Adam Milne after scoring 13. Southee, Sodhi, Milne and James Neesham got one wicket each for the Kiwis.

Daryl Mitchell plays a blinder

Thereafter, Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway made sure that their team ended the powerplay at 36 for two. The duo cobbled together a partnership of 82 runs and bailed the Kiwis out of jail to some extent.

Conway was starting to look ominous, having scored 46, but Livingstone sent him packing  Soon after Livingstone also removed the dangerous Glenn Phillips. India have managed to end their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign on a positive note after winning their final Super 12 match against Namibia. On Monday, November 8, Virat Kohli and Co. defeated Gerhard Erasmus’s men by nine wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Namibia began their Super 12 campaign by beating Scotland, but they finished with four hefty losses in a row.

Ashwin, Jadeja come to the party

After electing to field first, India restricted Namibia to an under-par score of 132 for the loss of eight wickets. Stephan Baard and Michael van Lingen put on 33 runs for the opening wicket off 28 balls to take their team off to a steady start. But soon they lost four wickets and were reduced to 47 for four. Craig Williams was promoted up the batting order to No.3, but he failed to open his account.

Namibia lost half their side in the 13th over with their score at 72. David Wiese looked ominous during his stay in the middle. The veteran scored 26 with two fours, but Jasprit Bumrah accounted for his wicket. In the end, Jan Frylinck and Ruben Trumpelmann’s cameos took Namibia past the 120-run mark. Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets apiece.

Rohit plays a blinder

India started their run-chase in a comprehensive manner, scoring 54 runs in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul made sure that Namibia weren’t allowed to get a foothold back into the contest. Frylinck ended his stay after he made a 37-ball 56, laced with seven fours and two sixes. Soon after, Rahul also notched a fifty off 35 balls. He managed to stay unbeaten on 54 with four fours and two sixes as India chased the target down with 28 balls left. Suryakumar Yadav played a handy knock of 25 off 19 with four fours. Pakistan got pushed to No.2 in Group 2 points table after New Zealand beat Afghanistan by eight wickets in Abu Dhabi. However, Babar Azam’s men got back their top spot after beating Scotland by 72 runs on Sunday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Pakistan will now face Australia in their semi-final game. As far as Scotland are concerned, they ended their campaign with five losses on the trot.

Babar, Malik take charge

After electing to bat first, Pakistan racked up a formidable score of 189 for four on the board. The Men in Green were a tad circumspect in the powerplay as they scored 35 runs and lost Mohammad Rizwan’s wicket to Hamza Tahir. Pakistan found themselves in a bit of hole after Fakhar Zaman became Chris Greaves’ first victim. In the first 10 overs, they could only manage to score 60.

From there on, Babar Azam and Co. stepped on the gas and racked up 129 runs in their last 10 overs. The skipper came to the party yet another time, scoring 66 off 47 with five fours and three sixes. Mohammad Hafeez also chipped in with a useful 19-ball 31. But in the end, it was Shoaib Malik’s unbeaten 18-ball 54, laced with one four and six sixes, that injected impetus into the innings.

Pakistan get home comfortably

Scotland found the going tough in the powerplay as they scored only 24 runs in it and lost the wicket of their skipper Kyle Coetzer. Matthew Cross, one of their prolific run-scorers, perished after Imad Wasim ran him out at the non-striker’s end. Dylan Budge came in place of Calum Macleod, but couldn’t open his account. George Munsey stayed until the 11th over and strained to find any momentum.

The southpaw huffed and puffed to a 31-ball 17 before Shadab Khan ended his painful vigil. Richie Berrington scored three ducks in the World Cup, but he made a comeback with a 34-ball half-century. The right-hander stayed not out on 54 off 37 with the help of four fours and one six. For Pakistan, Shadab Khan was the standout bowler as he ended his brilliant figures of 4-0-14-2.

New Zealand, on Sunday, November 7, defeated Afghanistan by eight wickets in their Super 12 match of the T20 World Cup 2021 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. With the win, they also became the second team from Group 2 after Pakistan to qualify for the semi-final of the mega event. In the meantime, the Afghans and Virat Kohli’s India have been knocked out of the tournament.

Najibullah Zadran makes hay

The Afghans found themselves in all sorts of trouble after electing to bat first. They scored only 23 runs and lost three wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Mohammad Shahzad and Hazratullah Zazai in the first six overs. At the end of 10 overs, the Afghans were placed at 56 for four. But from there on, skipper Mohammad Nabi and the left-handed Najibullah Zadran pulled their team out of jail.

The duo put on 59 runs for the fifth wicket and steadied the ship for the Afghans. Najibullah looked at his very best and he got to his half-century off 33 balls. The southpaw went on to score 73 runs off 48 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes. He got out to Trent Boult in the penultimate over of the innings. In the end, the Afghans went on to score 124 for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.

Williamson shows his class for New Zealand

The Kiwis got off to a decent start as they scored 45 runs in the powerplay. Daryl Mitchell smashed a 12-ball 17 before Mujeeb Ur Rahman accounted for his wicket. Martin Guptill looked good for his 23-ball 28 after which Rashid Khan rattled his woodwork. From there on, skipper Kane Williamson and Devon Conway took charge and steadied the ship for the Kiwis in the tricky run-chase.

Williamson showed why he’s regarded as one of the most matured batters doing the rounds. The right-hander stayed not out on 40 runs off 42 balls with three fours. Devon Conway has strained to score runs in the tournament, but even he seemed to have found his rhythm. The left-hander scored an unbeaten 32-ball 36 as the Black Caps chased a target of 125 with as many as 11 balls left.
