Mumbai Indians got over the line against Delhi Capitals as the local crowd received a happy send-off by their team at the Wankhede. It was their new acquisition, Tim David, who played a match-defining knock of 34 runs in 11 balls. David revealed after the game that he worked really hard on his shape after struggling in the early part of the tournament.

The Singaporean, who was given an early reprieve, made maximum utilization of the lifeline and dumped Delhi out of the tournament with his blistering knock. The defeat meant Royal Challengers Bangalore remained in fourth place, with Delhi falling two points short of the IPL 2022 playoffs. Needless to mention, RCB fans lavished massive praises on David’s knock, which pretty much sealed the three-time finalists’ place in the playoffs.

“Ishan (Kishan) told me the wicket was getting flatter, it was holding a bit with the slower balls, but I just had to hold my shape and back my game, keep it simple. I got lucky with a couple of baby sixes. It is all about repetition and holding your shape,” said Tim David in the post-match presentation. “Early in the season, I was leaning back on the ball a bit, so I’ve worked really hard on my shape, happy with the result. It’s been a tough season, but we’ve played some good cricket,” he added.

Tim David received a message from the RCB players before the match

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s win against Gujarat Titans meant that they needed Mumbai to topple Delhi to make it to the playoffs. RCB’s Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis made no secret of the fact that they would be rooting for the Mumbai side in the game. The RCB camp was pictured celebrating after Mumbai’s win against DC, as they went through to the playoffs.

The former RCB man himself, David disclosed that he did receive a message from the RCB players in the lead up to the game. “I got a message from Faf this morning – it was a picture of him, Maxi, and Virat all in an MI kit, maybe I’ll get to post that on Instagram later,” said the MI batter.

‘Only themselves to blame’ – Ravi Shastri on Rishabh Pant’s judgemental error against MI https://www.crictracker.com/only-themselves-to-blame-ravi-shastri-on-rishabh-pants-judgemental-error-against-mi/ Sun, 22 May 2022 06:07:48 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=647997 Rishabh Pant and Ravi Shastri

Delhi Capitals’ defeat against struggling Mumbai Indians meant that Royal Challengers Bangalore sneaked into the IPL 2022 playoffs. The Capitals have no one but themselves to blame as skipper Rishabh Pant opted against a review when Tim David was given not out after seemingly edging the ball to the keeper. Pant’s decision surprised everyone, but what followed wasn’t a surprise to anybody as David clobbered his way to 34 off just 11 balls.

A distraught Rishabh Pant afterwards said he felt that Tim David had nicked the ball but decided against the review as most of his teammates inside the circle did not seem convinced. His decision to not review turned out to be a blunder as the game that was seemingly in their hands slipped away after David’s innings. Ravi Shastri was left bemused by Pant’s decision not to go for the DRS. The former Indian coach said it was common sense to take that review as they had an opportunity to take two quick wickets.

“What does common sense demand? Okay, there’s Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur, but what are the others doing there? Common sense demands five overs left, two reviews, Tim David has just come in, you’ve taken a wicket, and you have a great opportunity of taking two wickets quickly. And still, five overs to go. And you have the upper hand, you had to take it,” Shastri said on Star Sports after the match before adding that “it’s a no-brainer.”

“This is a bitter pill to swallow. It’s like a balloon that burst above them. They are going to have sleepless nights over this one because it’s a place for the playoffs that you’ve missed out on,” he added

DC’s crucible is RCB’s paradise

Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians opted to bowl first after winning the toss. The five-time winners had DC on the ropes at 50 for 4 in 8.4 overs as Jasprit Bumrah (3/25) looked in imperious form. But, Rovman Powell and Rishabh Pant revived their innings with a 75-run stand off 44 balls. Axar Patel added the finishing touch with an unbeaten 19 of ten deliveries.

Chasing a target of 160 runs, MI didn’t have the best of starts as Khaleel Ahmed showcased a fiery opening spell against Rohit Sharma. Rohit’s miserable stay at the crease ended as the Mumbai skipper made just two runs in 13 balls. Ishan Kishan and Dewald Brevis then added 51 runs off 37 balls. Kishan and Brevis were dismissed as MI was reduced to 95/3 in the 15th over.

But, it was the Tim David show after that as he smashed the DC bowlers for four sixes and two boundaries in his 11-ball stay at the crease. David’s blitz ensured MI’s win as Ramandeep Singh saw his team home with five balls to spare.

“They have only themselves to blame, nothing else. No excuses, you can’t hide behind anything, you lost it, more than Mumbai Indians winning it. You didn’t deserve to qualify and RCB does,” Ravi Shastri said after the game. Delhi Capitals’ defeat meant that Royal Challengers Bangalore joined Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Lucknow Super Giants in the playoffs.

‘He is the right choice for captain’ – DC head coach Ricky Ponting comes out in support of Rishabh Pant amid defeat against MI https://www.crictracker.com/he-is-the-right-choice-for-captain-dc-head-coach-ricky-ponting-comes-out-in-support-of-rishabh-pant-amid-defeat-against-mi/ Sun, 22 May 2022 04:52:27 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=647982 Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has come out in support of Rishabh Pant following the team’s five-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians on Saturday (May 21). It was indeed a heartbreaking loss for DC as a win by any margin would have propelled them to the IPL 2022 playoffs. Moreover, MI endured a horrendous campaign this season and were the last-placed team in the points table.

With these many odds in their favour, the Capitals looked favourites to clinch this fixture. However, it wasn’t their day as MI ended their campaign on a high. Meanwhile, DC have no one but themselves to blame as some judgmental and fielding errors cost them the game. Pant had dropped the in-form Dewald Brevis and the young South African did some further damage.

Another big mistake DC committed was not taking a review against Tim David. The dasher had edged the ball to Pant early in his innings but neither the umpire nor the wicketkeeper was able to identify the dismissal. David made the Capitals pay as he smashed an 11-ball 34 to seal the game for his team. Needless to mention, these blunders earned Pant a lot of criticism, and his leadership credentials were also questioned.

Rishabh Pant certainly got my full backing: Ricky Ponting

Ponting, however, reckons the wicketkeeper-batter is the right man to lead the Delhi-based team. “Absolutely, no doubt in my mind that Rishabh even in the last season he was the right choice for captain. Rishabh did a terrific job with the team after he took over from Shreyas (Iyer) after he injured his shoulders,” Ponting said during the press conference after DC lost by five wickets against MI.

“He is just a young man and still learning captaincy. Being captain of a T20 team, especially in IPL, which is a high pressure tournament, is not easy thing to do and unfortunately, every single thing you do will be scrutinised. He certainly got my full backing.”

Mumbai Indians got the better of Delhi Capitals by five wickets in Match 69 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 21. By virtue of this win, Mumbai not only sign off on a high but also eliminate Delhi from the competition as the Royal Challengers Bangalore become the fourth and final team to clinch a playoff berth.

Speaking of the game, Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first. His decision was spot on as the Capitals were reduced to 50/4 in the ninth over before captain Rishabh Pant and Rovman Powell added 75 runs for the fifth wicket. Pant scored 39 runs from 33 deliveries while Powell top-scored for DC with a 34-ball 43 which took them to a fighting total of 159/7.

For Mumbai, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah starred with figures of 3/25 while Ramandeep Singh took 2/29 and the duo of Daniel Sams and Mayank Markande took a wicket each.

Tim David ends DC’s IPL 2022 campaign with a splendid knock

In reply, skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed for two but, Ishan Kishan and Dewald Brevis added a 51-run stand for the second wicket. While Kishan scored 48 off 35 balls, Brevis made a well-made 37. Nonetheless, it was once again Tim David who carried out the rescue act in the middle order with a cameo knock of 34 off 11 balls. DC, on the other hand, failed to handle the pressure in the middle overs with Rishabh Pant dropping a catch behind the stumps.

While Delhi did pick up some wickets at the back end, Ramandeep Singh (13*) took up the responsibility in the slog overs and helped MI get over the line in the final over. Anrich Nortje (2/37) and Shardul Thakur (2/32) were the picks of the DC bowlers while Kuldeep Yadav registered a scalp to his name.

Losing skipper, Rishabh Pant said:

“For most of the game we were on top. On occasions, we let the game slip away from our grasp when we were on top. That’s what we were doing throughout the season. Not good enough to win this match I guess. It’s not about pressure. We could have done better execution and planning. Learn from mistakes and come back stronger next year. We were 5-7 runs short but we bowled really well. We bowled well throughout the tournament, but dew came in towards the end and we didn’t bowl to our plans. It’s hard but we got to take it on our chin and learn from it. I thought there was something (about not reviewing the Tim David caught behind). Everyone standing in the circle wasn’t convinced and at the end I didn’t go up. We were discussing (with Ponting) that we will tell bowlers to keep it simple. Just keep doing what is working for us and keep believing.”

Winning skipper, Rohit Sharma said:

“We were here to win the game. I know few teams were watching us closely, but we wanted to finish on a high. We’ll try to correct the mistakes next season. It was tough after losing eight games, so we needed to rectify the mistakes. But I think we performed well in the second half of the season. When they got to 160 I was nervous, because it was a sluggish pitch. It wasn’t coming on to the bat nicely. I thought if you restrict a team to 150-160, it was about getting one good partnership. We didn’t get off to a good start, but that partnership put us in a good position. There are a lot of things, I have been talking about it, it’s the collective performance that get you through. When the bowlers did well, the batters didn’t. And when the batters performed well, the bowlers didn’t. We came to the party a bit too late, but at least we can take a few positives from this tournament. Every time we go into the auction, we keep an eye on the players who will play for us in a couple of cycles. We get a few youngsters who will eventually go on and play for their country. Congrats to them [on RCB], they have qualified, I would like to wish all the four teams all the best. May the best team win.”

Player of the Match, Jasprit Bumrah said:

“Nothing special, just tried to have fun, and enjoyed my game. Very happy with how the last game went. The wicket is quite fast here, there’s pace and bounce. But this (today’s pitch) was slow, and the bounce was low. There wasn’t much swing, so we assessed the conditions and tried to execute our plans. Whenever you are new to the game, so you need to learn a lot. I try to help the youngsters as much as I can. We tried to help them as much as we can, so that it’s a good atmosphere (in the dressing room). Improving your game is a yearly process, it doesn’t stop. We need to analyse next year and come back strong. I was very happy with my rhythm after coming back from Sri Lanka, was happy with the execution. After the ball is released from my hand, I can’t do much. I just try to keep things simple, and execute as much as I can.”

Jasprit Bumrah took figures of 3/25 in his four-over spell as Mumbai Indians (MI) restricted Delhi Capitals (DC) to 159/7 in 20 overs eventually winning by five wickets in the penultimate league match of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Wicketkeeper and opening batter Ishan Kishan scored 48 while Tim David hammered 34 off just 11 which included two fours and four towering sixes to seal the deal for MI and eliminate DC from the campaign. With this victory, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are through to the playoffs and will contest with Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator clash.

Speaking about how the match went by, captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. DC got off to a disastrous start as opener David Warner and the man-in-form Mitchell Marsh got dismissed for five and zero respectively. Prithvi Shaw, who made a comeback to the team, managed to score 24 off 23. Skipper Rishabh Pant amassed 39 while big-hitter Rovman Powell mustered 43 off just 34 which included a boundary and four maximums. Bumrah bowled the latter to keep the Capitals’ score to under 160.

Chasing 160 to win, Rohit’s calamitous season was summed up as he got out for two after facing 13 deliveries. He endured his worst season with a total of just 268 runs to his name in 14 innings. Rohit had scored 286 runs in the 2018 edition and this campaign turned out to be a nightmare for him. Ishan kept going for MI as he slammed three fours and four sixes in his knock of 48. Young Dewald Brevis, who also made a comeback, scored 37 off 33.

But just when things looked to be in MI’s favour both Ishan and Brevis got dismissed and it opened the doors for DC. Tim David was caught behind off the very first ball against Shardul Thakur only to be not reviewed by Pant. He made DC pay with his quickfire innings which put curtains on the Capitals’ campaign. MI ended the season at rock bottom with just four wins while Pant’s team just missed out on the playoffs spot to finish fifth. For his solid spell, Jasprit Bumrah won the Player of the Match award.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from Match 69 between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League 2022:

148 – Jasprit Bumrah surpassed Harbhajan Singh (147) and is now the second-highest wicket-taker (148) for MI in all T20s. Lasith Malinga tops the chart with 195 wickets to his name.

37/3 – DC recorded their lowest score of 37/3 in the powerplay this campaign. Their previous lowest total was 38/1 against Rajasthan Royals (RR).

55/4 – DC also registered their lowest total of 55/4 after ten overs this season. Their previous lowest was 73/2 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the halfway mark.

268 – Rohit Sharma scored 268 runs this season which is the least he has managed in any IPL edition. He had amassed 286 runs in the year 2018.

100 – Daniel Sams reached the landmark of 100 wickets in T20 cricket.

27/1 – MI scripted their lowest total of 27/1 in the powerplay in IPL 2022. They had scored just 35/1 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) previously.

397 – Tilak Varma smashed the fourth-most runs (397) by an uncapped player in their debut IPL season. Shaun Marsh scored 616 in 2008, Devdutt Padikkal 473 in 2020, and Shreyas Iyer 439 in 2015.

22 – Rohit has now gone 22 innings without a half-century in the IPL.

19.14 – Rohit ended his disastrous season at an average of just 19.14 in 14 innings.

21 – Kuldeep Yadav equalled Pragyan Ojha for most wickets (21) by a left-arm spinner in an IPL campaign. Ojha snared those scalps in the year 2010.

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians managed to end their campaign on a high note after defeating the Delhi Capitals in their last group stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. As a result, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have now become the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs.

MI skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to have a field first. The MI bowlers got some success early on as they dismissed the Australian duo of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh within 3.2 overs. Things went bad to worse for the Capitals as they also lost their other opener, Prithvi Shaw, soon.

However, a decent partnership between skipper Rishabh Pant and Rovman Powell ensured that DC do not bog down in their batting. Some late blitz by all-rounder Axar Patel ensured that the Capitals post a competitive 159 in their allotted 20 overs. For MI, senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers as he scalped three crucial wickets. Ramandeep Singh, Daniel Sams, and Mayank Markande also scalped at least one wicket for their team.

Chasing 160, MI had a cautious start

Chasing 160 to win, the five-time champions started cautiously as they scored 25 runs in 5.1 overs before captain Rohit Sharma’s bad campaign ended as he managed to score just two runs and used up 13 deliveries. However, his partner Ishan Kishan was going all guns blazing as he scored a vital 48 in just 35 balls.

Young South African batter Dewald Brevis also played a handy knock of 37 runs. However, the superb batting effort from foreign batter Tim David and young batter Tilak Varma sealed the game for the Men in Blue and Gold. As mentioned earlier, RCB have now become the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans (GT), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are the other top three teams in the points table.

Here’s the updated points table after tonight’s match:

‘Fireworks in RCB camp’ – Tim David crushes DC’s playoff dreams as MI end season on a high https://www.crictracker.com/fireworks-in-rcb-camp-tim-david-crushes-dcs-playoff-dreams-as-mi-end-season-on-a-high/ Sat, 21 May 2022 18:09:12 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=647902 Tim David

Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2022 playoffs dreams have been crushed and they have nobody but themselves to blame. In a must-win match, Rishabh Pant’s men needed to defeat struggling Mumbai Indians to secure a place in the final four. However, some fielding and judgemental errors meant DC failed to cross the line and MI ended the season on a high. Notably, Mumbai Indians’ five-wicket triumph also meant Royal Challengers Bangalore will now advance to the playoffs.

Earlier in the contest, Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bowl at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The move paid dividends straight away as DC lost two of their in-form batters, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, cheaply. While Prithvi Shaw got off to a start on return, he fell prey to Jasprit Bumrah for a 23-ball 24. As Sarfaraz Khan was also dismissed for 10, DC were reduced to 50/4 and looked in a spot of bother.

The repair work was then done by skipper Rishabh Pant (39) and Rovman Powell (43). Known for their aggressive intent, the duo were watchful in the middle and added 75 runs for the fifth wicket. Unfortunately for DC, none of the two could stay till the end as MI pulled things back in slog overs. While pace spearhead Bumrah scalped three wickets, Ramandeep Singh dismissed a couple of batters.

Tim David takes DC bowlers by storm

As a result, DC were restricted to 159/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Meanwhile, MI didn’t get a desirable start either as skipper Rohit Sharma endured yet another failure. The veteran faced 13 balls and could only manage a couple of runs before being dismissed. However, Ishan Kishan joined forces with Dewald Brevis and the duo steadied the ship with a 51-run stand.

While Kishan was dismissed for 48, Brevis made 37 off 33 balls. Their departure welcomed Tilak Varma and Tim David in the middle and the duo made absolute mockery of DC’s bowling attack. The latter was destructive in particular as he made the Capitals pay for giving him a lifeline earlier in the innings. David cleared the ropes for fun and scored 34 off just 11 deliveries. Varma, on the other hand, scored 21 as MI crossed the line in 19.1 overs, clinching the contest by five wickets.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to MI’s triumph:

Rishabh Pant has not done justice to his talent in IPL 2022: Nikhil Chopra https://www.crictracker.com/rishabh-pant-has-not-done-justice-to-his-talent-in-ipl-2022-nikhil-chopra/ Sat, 21 May 2022 15:49:57 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=647815 Rishabh Pant

One of the finest Indian players at this moment, Rishabh Pant has been leading the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise since the 2021 edition. Capitals sealed the playoffs spot in the last edition, and Pant was impressive with his ball-striking capabilities. However, he has lacked his natural form in IPL 2022, resulting in the team’s struggle to seal the playoffs spot. Currently, DC is featuring in a must-win encounter against Mumbai Indians (MI). Ahead of this fixture, the former Indian cricketers Nikhil Chopra and Mohammad Azharuddin discussed the form of Rishabh Pant in the ongoing season.

Chopra thinks Pant has not done justice to his talent in this season and mentioned the fact that the southpaw has been unable to score a single fifty in this season, as opposed to his total of three half-centuries in the 2021 edition. He hoped that the DC captain provides a hefty contribution, and win the crucial match for the team against Mumbai Indians. In 14 matches, Pant has scored 340 runs at a strike rate of 151.78.

“He would surely look to forget the last few innings and would look to start afresh in this fixture. So far, he has not done justice to his talent, as you can look in his stats. He has come at number four and not scored a single fifty. It is important that he does well, scores a half-century, and helps the team to win the game. If they reach the playoffs, all the batters need to be in good form. Apart from Mitchell Marsh, only Rovman Powell has scored a half-century,” said Chopra on Sky247.net presents ‘Not Just Cricket’ Show on CricTracker.

Rishabh Pant needs to concentrate on the conversion of his starts: Mohammad Azharuddin

Azharuddin thinks Pant can not be called out-of-form, as the batter is scoring 30-40 runs in a consistent manner. He advises the 24-year-old cricketer to concentrate on converting his starts into big ones to help the team in securing a victory. Meanwhile, Pant was dismissed for 39 off 33 in the ongoing fixture against MI and again failed to convert his start.

“If the player gets out on 30-40, you cannot say he is out-of-form, but the reason in concentration lapse. He has not been able to capitalize on his starts, and he might be thinking quite ahead of the game. He is naturally a talented player and scores in a quick fashion in Tests, and it can be easy for him in the T20s. If he wants from me, I will tell him to concentrate on converting his starts into a big one,” said Azharuddin.

Mumbai Indians are all set to take on the Delhi Capitals in their next encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in the penultimate game of the league stage of IPL 2022. The Rohit Sharma-led side has nothing to lose as they are already knocked out of the race for the playoffs and they will be looking to use the options on the bench in consideration of the future. They have played some good cricket in the last few games and will be looking to sign off with a victory in what has been a disappointing season for them.

On the other hand, this will be an important fixture for the Delhi Capitals who still have a chance to make it to the playoffs. The Rishabh Pant-led side registered a good win against Punjab Kings in their previous encounter without the services of Prithvi Shaw and a win in the upcoming fixture would be enough for them to go past RCB on the net run rate. Shaw is expected to make the playing XI if he gets fit, in place of Sarfaraz Khan.
