Commonwealth Games Cricket 2022: 3 teams that can win the Gold medal https://www.crictracker.com/commonwealth-games-cricket-2022-3-teams-that-can-win-the-gold-medal/ Tue, 26 Jul 2022 07:46:13 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=675064 India Women against Sri Lanka Women

A new chapter is about to open in Women’s cricket as they are set to feature in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in its history in 2022. The multi-sport tournament is going to feature cricket for only the second time after a hiatus of almost 24 years in Birmingham. Women’s cricket was part of the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014, with Pakistan winning the Gold on both occasions.

The historic tournament in Birmingham will commence on the 29th of July and will feature eight teams, divided into two groups of four. The ten-day long tournament will be played in the T20 format and will feature 16 matches, hosted by Edgbaston. Although it is expected to be a hotly contested affair with the Gold medal at stake, some teams are the favourites going into the tournament.

Here are three teams who can win the gold medal in the competition:

1. Australia

The dominant force in Women’s cricket, Australia are at the summit of the rankings in all formats of the game and are one of the bookie’s favourites to clinch the gold at the quadrennial sporting event. Led by their enigmatic leader Meg Lanning, Australia got their hands on the seventh World Cup title earlier this year, defeating arch-rivals England in the final.

The Aussies are also the most successful T20I team in women’s cricket, with five World Cup titles to their name in seven editions of the tournament, a testament to their superiority. The reigning champions will face off against India in the opening fixture of the tournament.

Beth Mooney is the lynchpin in the batting order for the Women in Yellow alongside skipper Meg Lanning. The pair are the highest ranked T20I batters in the ICC rankings. The emergence of Ashleigh Gardner has been fruitful for them, who will be vying to make a mark in the tournament alongside the mercurial Ellyse Perry from the all-rounder contingent.

2. England

Australia’s nemesis and the 2017 Women’s ODI World Cup winners England are arguably the biggest threat to the Kangaroos’ ambition of clinching the gold medal at this tournament. England and Australia are placed in different groups being the top-seeded sides and could potentially lock horns in the blockbuster finale, in a repeat of the 2022 ODI WC final.

The English camp has been hit by terrible news ahead of the tournament, as the 2017 WC-winning skipper Heather Knight is doubtful for the CWG 2022 after sustaining a hip injury in the ongoing series against South Africa.

They will be looking to redeem themselves by winning the gold medal after losing out on the WC title earlier this year. Knight’s deputy Nat Sciver has been in inspired form of late and is likely to lead the side if Knight misses out. Young bowling sensation Sophie Ecclestone will be accompanying veteran spearhead Katherine Brunt in the bowling department.

3. India

India Women against Sri Lanka Women

The Women in Blue are the dark horses for the momentous tournament at CWG 2022 and can throw in the spanner in the hopes and dreams of Australia and England. The fourth-ranked T20I team in the world is capable of turning over any side in the world on their day, and the opponents will be wary of their abilities.

Under the truculent leadership of star all-rounder Harmanpreet Kaur, India have reinvigorated their hunger after a disappointing World Cup earlier this year. Mithali Raj’s retirement in June has left a massive void to fill for the Indian camp, but the emergence of youngsters like Harleen Deol bodes well for the team.

The onus will be on the eye-catching opening duo of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma along with accomplished all-rounder Deepti Sharma, while the bowling lineup will be relying upon Radha Yadav, who has been a constant threat with her left-arm spin.

With the ODI series coming to an end, England and South Africa will embark on a T20I series which is set to begin on July 27. Their ODI series ended in a stalemate as the decider was washed out on Sunday (July 24). The South African bowlers performed really well in the first game and changed the course of the game in the nick of time, but the hosts bounced back stronger to win the second game.

The Keshav Maharaj-led Proteas won the first game by 62 runs as England failed to chase the 334-run target. In the second game, England emerged victorious and registered a thumping 118-run win. South Africa looked in good touch in the final match as top-order batter Quinton de Kock neared his century, but rain played a spoilsport and washed the match out.

The South African top-order has been commendable in the tour so far, whereas the English batting order has been dependent upon a couple of players. On the other hand, the bowling units of both sides have shown sheer class and will be something to look out for once again. The two teams will now face each other in three T20Is followed by as many Test matches, starting in August and lasting till September.

Here’s all you need to know about the series:

England’s hopes of recording a maiden series triumph under new white-ball skipper Jos Buttler were dashed on Sunday as the ODI series decider between the hosts and South Africa was washed out after just two hours of play at Headingley. The two sides finished the three-match ODI series on level terms and will have to do it all over again in the three-match T20I series commencing on 27th July, Wednesday.

England have suffered back-to-back series defeats ever since Jos Buttler took over the reins from Eoin Morgan after the latter bid farewell to international cricket in June. Ben Stokes won’t be available for the hosts as he had requested a rest from the series, a telling blow for the English camp.

South Africa, on the other hand, will welcome their bowling spearhead, Kagiso Rabada, back into the squad, and will be led by veteran batter David Miller in the absence of Temba Bavuma. Quinton de Kock looked in phenomenal touch in the final ODI and stroked his way to 92* off just 76 deliveries before the match was called off due to persistent rain. The visitors will be buoyed by his return to form as the southpaw will be crucial for their chances in the T20I series.

England lost their last T20I series against India 2-1 after being comprehensively beaten in the first two T20Is. Meanwhile, South Africa’s latest assignment in the format also came against India in a five-match series which finished on level terms after the fifth match was washed out.

When and where to watch the England vs South Africa T20I matches in India?

The T20I series opener between the two heavyweights will be hosted by the County Ground in Bristol on the 27th of July, and the following match will take place at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff the very next day with both matches commencing at 11 PM IST. The series will culminate with the final T20I being held at The Rose Bowl in Southampton in a 7 PM kickoff on the 31st of July. The matches will be broadcast by the Sony Sports Network and can be streamed online on the Sony LIV app.

In a big blow for the England Women’s team, skipper Heather Knight is unsure to lead her side in the upcoming Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 due to a hip injury. The senior batter sustained the injury during the first T20I encounter against South Africa.

As a result, Knight missed the second T20I match on July 23 and is also set to miss the final T20I encounter as a precaution. Despite missing their permanent skipper, Team England under the leadership of stand-in captain Nat Sciver has already secured the series and will look to win the final match as well.

Heather Knightwill miss the third T20I against South Africa

“Heather Knight has irritation in her hip joint. She has had an injection and will continue to be assessed and treated ahead of the Commonwealth Games. She will miss today’s third T20I as a precaution,” England women’s team manager said while providing an update on Knight’s injury.

Knight is one of the most successful skippers to lead the England women’s team. The English side, under her leadership, went on to win the 2017 World Cup at the Lord’s Cricket Ground after defeating Team India by nine runs, but they could not retain their title in 2022 after Australia went on to win the 50-over World Cup this time.

Talking about the CWG 2022, the English side is placed in Group B alongside Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa. Meanwhile, Team India are placed in Group A with Australia, Barbados, and Pakistan. It will be the first time that women’s cricket will be seen in the CWG with all the matches to be played in the 20-over format.

Meanwhile, the England team has already announced its squad for the upcoming tournament and will back themselves to win a medal.

England’s CWG squad: Heather Knight (c), Nat Sciver (vc), Maia Bouchier, Katherine Brunt, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Freya Davies, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones, Freya Kemp, Bryony Smith, Issy Wong, Danni Wyatt.

England Women have already clinched the ongoing three-match series after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead over South Africa. The Three Lions put up a dominant all-round display in the first two games, giving the visitors no chance. South Africa, on the other hand, will look to end the tour with a win, having lost all three ODIs and the first two T20Is.

In the first T20I, South Africa were put to bat first and only managed to put up 111 runs on board in 20 overs. Laura Wolvaardt starred with the bat, scoring 55 off 49 balls. But the innings belonged to England’s talismanic pacer Katherine Brunt. England’s chase, led by opener Sophia Dunkley, was completed in only 15 overs.

In the second T20I, Sune Luus’s side was put to bat again, and openers Anneke Bosch and Lara Goodall added 102 runs for the first wicket, helping the team amass a total of 148. England chased it down in 19 overs, courtesy of a captain’s knock of 47 from Nat Sciver. From England’s perspective, they would want to finish unbeaten across all formats against their South African counterparts.

A four-member team of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has completed their review of the security among other arrangements in Pakistan before the Three Lions make their visit to the country for playing a seven-match T20I series against the Men in Green in September and a Test series post the T20 World Cup.

The delegation has now left Pakistan after expressing their satisfaction regarding the arrangements. The four-member team visited four cities in Pakistan including Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Islamabad. The team inspected cities’ airports, routes, and cricket stadiums during their one-week visit. The delegation was also briefed by Pakistan’s high-level government organizations and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials.

The delegation will now submit its status report to ECB

After completing its visit, the four-member team will now submit its report to the ECB, and the dates for the T20I series and the Test series are expected to be finalized after the review.

As per reports, the T20I series is expected to be played in Lahore and Karachi, while the Test matches are expected to be held in three different venues with one of the venues expected to be Multan Cricket Stadium. At present, Pakistan are taking on Sri Lanka in a Test series in Sri Lanka.

The visitors won the first Test match after getting a good fight from the home team and are currently playing the second Test match. Talking about England, the Three Lions are playing against South Africa in a three-match ODI series. The home team lost the first ODI fixture by a big margin but made a resounding comeback in the second fixture as they bundled out the Proteas side under the 100-run mark.

Talking about the third match, South Africa after winning the toss, decided to have a bat first and have crossed the 150-run mark after losing two wickets. Both teams will be looking to win the final match and clinch the series and as of now, the venue is experiencing a rain delay.

In their resignation, the board of Cricket Scotland wrote: “When the review into racism in Scottish cricket was announced last year we were fully supportive of the review. The review has achieved an unparalleled level of engagement and we believe it will be truly transformative, not just for Cricket Scotland and the sport of cricket, but it will provide a watershed moment for Scottish sport and society in general. The Board have been totally committed to implementing the findings of this review in full to make the sport of cricket in Scotland a truly welcoming and inclusive place for all. We are all truly sorry and have apologised publicly to everyone who has experienced racism, or any other form of discrimination, in cricket in Scotland.

“The Board has also made important initial steps to improve the governance and leadership of Cricket Scotland since the start of the year. This is, without doubt, the start of another long journey to overhaul and modernise the governance of the sport to ensure its continued success in the years ahead.

“These two programmes of work, one to deliver a thorough, fair and speedy resolution to the issues raised about racism, and the other to overhaul and modernise the governance of the sport are individually huge challenges for a small organisation like Cricket Scotland. We acknowledge the significant support received from sportscotland to date, and we know that they will continue to work in partnership to ensure speedy progress going forward.

“However, while the Board has not been given sight of the review report, it is now aware of the proposed timescales and of certain mandated actions proposed within the report that it believes make the delivery of these two programmes unachievable within the timetable proposed and the current governance framework. Consequently, we believe we must now step aside to enable the required progress to be made in the coming months.”

Scotland’s leading wicket-taker Majid, and his teammate Qasim Sheikh, had made startling revelations in November last year in an interview with Sky Sports, stating that they were victims of racist abuse during their playing career and that they were differently treated due to their different skin colour.

Essex at the centre of racism row

Meanwhile, some serious racism allegations have been made against the county side Essex as well. Earlier, former Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq had claimed that he was also a victim of racist abuse which shook the entire cricketing fraternity.

To note, Rafiq decided to open up about how he was treated differently during his ten-year-long stay in Yorkshire last year in November. As a result, Yorkshire had to make some serious changes in their camp, sacking the whole coaching staff and others involved in the racism row before conducting fresh appointments.

Last November, former Essex players including Maurice Chambers, Zoheb Sharif, and Jahid Ahmed have alleged former Essex coach and captain for racial abuse. The independent report is expected to be made public in September this year. Meanwhile, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has not given any comment on the ongoing investigation. It may be noted that Essex had to pay the heavy monetary penalty after being found guilty to two charges related to racist comments made at a made board meeting in Chelmsford in 2017.

After winning the second ODI by a comfortable margin and leveling the series, England will now take on the visitors South Africa in the third and final ODI match, to be played at Headingley, Leeds on July 24 (Sunday). Both top teams will be looking to put on a competitive show and win the final match to bag the series.

Despite winning the second ODI, the Three Lions have a lot to think about as they failed to bat their allotted 29 overs during the second ODI fixture. South Africa, on the other hand, also performed miserably with the bat as they failed to even cross the 100-run mark.
