Bangladesh are set to travel to Zimbabwe for three T20Is and as many ODIs, starting on July 30 in Harare. The momentum is high with the Asian team as they enter this series after beating West Indies by 3-0 in the ODI series. Although they lost the Test and T20I series against the Caribbean side, their dominating display in the ODIs set them in the right direction. On the other hand, Zimbabwe have qualified for the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup after beating Papua New Guinea in the qualifiers semi-final clash. They beat the Netherlands, another qualified side, in the finals of the qualifier on July 17.

Zimbabwe lost their previous bilateral series against Afghanistan last month. Zimbabwe lost all six matches (three T20Is and three ODIs) against Afghanistan at home. Hence, not many are backing them to trouble Bangladesh. The African team will be focusing to find some rhythm and momentum on this tour as they are scheduled to host India in a three-match ODI series at home later in August. They will then travel to Australia to play the same number of 50-over fixtures.

Bangladesh management made a big change to their T20I squad for this upcoming tour. Wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan has been named as stand-in skipper in place of rested Mahmudullah, who is unlikely to regain the captaincy duties in the future. According to various reports, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is planning to appoint star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as the next captain to lead the side in the shortest format of the game. The veteran opening batter Tamim Iqbal is leading the ODI squad for this tour as Shakib opted to rest.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have decided to rest regular T20I skipper Mahmudullah for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. The wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan replaces him for the three-match T20I series starting on July 30 in Harare. The star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is also rested for the series. Mahmudullah has captained Bangladesh in 43 T20I matches, winning 16 and losing 26 in the process.

The 36-year-old all-rounder took leadership duties in 2019 but has struggled with both performance and results. He was part of the recently concluded white-ball series against West Indies. BCB reportedly met the player on Friday before announcing both the squads for T20I and ODI series against Zimbabwe. On July 21, Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud revealed that the board is not happy with Mahmudullah’s leadership duties. Today after the squad announcement,  he stated that the T20 squad needs a fresh start ahead of the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup in October-November.

”We have decided that Nurul Hasan will lead the side in the upcoming T20Is. It is not that Sohan will lead the team in the World Cup. ‘We felt the T20 squad should make a new start as they are not performing well and we want the new guys to express them,” Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud said after the squad announcement as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Shakib Al Hasan to replace Mahmudullah?

Shakib Al Hasan is also rested for both T20I and ODI series against Zimbabwe. According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, BCB are looking to appoint the star all-rounder as a regular captain for the T20I team once he rejoins the squad. Shakib isn’t enjoying a smooth relationship with BCB after the player decided to skip the South Africa series as a part of workload management. But due to a lack of other options, the Bangladesh management is looking to hand over captaincy duties to their best player.

As per the latest developments, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would be having a word with their T20I skipper Mahmudullah Riyad before picking a skipper for this year’s T20 World Cup that is scheduled to be played in October-November this year.

Apparently, the current BCB president Nazmul Hasan has decided to sit down with the under-performing Mahmudullah to have a word regarding his future which also includes his availability for the showpiece event in global T20 cricket. Riyad’s last T20I half-century came against the rookies Papua New Guinea (PNG) during the last edition of the T20 World Cup in the UAE.

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals. He confirmed his decision after the conclusion of the three-match ODI series against West Indies on Saturday (July 16). Under Tamim’s leadership, Bangladesh clean swept the home team winning all three matches rather comfortably. However, post the third ODI, the left-hander revealed his decision in an official Facebook post.

The 33-year-old had taken a break from T20Is after consultation with the BCB in January this year and hadn’t played in the format for Bangladesh since then. However, he featured in a domestic tournament in the shortest format during this period. Meanwhile, there was a lot of confusion over his availability in T20Is after six months.

Tamim Iqbal was also unhappy with the board officials making statements about his T20I career. He didn’t feature in the West Indies T20 series either. With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, a decision had to be taken and the southpaw finally decided to call it quits from the format. “Please consider me retired from T20Is from today. Thank you everyone,” he wrote on his official Facebook page in Bangla.

Tamim Iqbal played 78 T20Is for Bangladesh

Tamim Iqbal played 78 T20 Internationals for Bangladesh after making his debut in 2007. He scored 1758 runs at an average of 24.08 and a strike rate of 116.9 while hitting seven fifties and a century. He was one of the main reasons for Bangladesh’s quick-fire starts in a lot of matches. Though Tamim hasn’t indicated much regarding his future in the other formats, it seems he is willing to continue playing for his country.

As for his performance in the ODI series, the Chittagong-born cricketer led from the front to end up as the highest run-getter. Tamim Iqbal scored 117 runs in three matches at an average of 58.5 in the series and was the only player to cross the three-figure mark. Nicholas Pooran was the next best batter with 91 runs in three outings in what was a low-scoring ODI series.

Bangladesh pacer Shohidul Islam has been suspended for 10 months after pleading guilty to breaching Article 2.1 of the ICC Anti-Doping code (Presence of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers in an Athlete’s Sample).

The 27-year-old pacer has represented Bangladesh in one T20I. After admitting the offence, Shohidul has been suspended from all forms of cricket for 10 months.

The 10-month suspension has been backdated to May 28, the day he admitted to the offence, meaning the Bangladesh pacer will be eligible to play on 28 March 2023.

Shohidul has played a solitary T20I for Bangladesh, where he picked up the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan in the third and final match of the series which Pakistan won 3-0.

He has been part of Bangladesh’s travelling squads for series against New Zealand and South Africa but did not get any game time. He was also a part of the Bangladesh Test and T20I squad for the ongoing tour of the West Indies but missed out due to a side strain.

Shohidul’s urine sample was positive for Clomifene, which is classified as a Specified Substance under WADA’s Prohibited List. It is prohibited both in-competition as well as out-of-competition. Shohidul had provided the urine sample as a part of ICC’s out-of-competition testing programme.

While handing out the suspension, the ICC confirmed that Shohidul had inadvertently ingested the prohibited substance in the form of a medicine that he had been legitimately prescribed for therapeutic purposes. Shohidul also testified that he had no intention to use the prohibited substance for performance enhancement.

As per Article 2.1 of the ICC Anti-Doping code “It is the Athletes’ personal duty to ensure that no Prohibited Substance enters their bodies. Athletes are responsible for any Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers found to be present in their Samples. Accordingly, it is not necessary that intent, Fault, Negligence or knowing Use on the Athlete’s part be demonstrated in order to establish an anti-doping rule violation under Article 2.1.”
