With the ODI series coming to an end, England and South Africa will embark on a T20I series which is set to begin on July 27. Their ODI series ended in a stalemate as the decider was washed out on Sunday (July 24). The South African bowlers performed really well in the first game and changed the course of the game in the nick of time, but the hosts bounced back stronger to win the second game.

The Keshav Maharaj-led Proteas won the first game by 62 runs as England failed to chase the 334-run target. In the second game, England emerged victorious and registered a thumping 118-run win. South Africa looked in good touch in the final match as top-order batter Quinton de Kock neared his century, but rain played a spoilsport and washed the match out.

The South African top-order has been commendable in the tour so far, whereas the English batting order has been dependent upon a couple of players. On the other hand, the bowling units of both sides have shown sheer class and will be something to look out for once again. The two teams will now face each other in three T20Is followed by as many Test matches, starting in August and lasting till September.

Here’s all you need to know about the series:

England’s hopes of recording a maiden series triumph under new white-ball skipper Jos Buttler were dashed on Sunday as the ODI series decider between the hosts and South Africa was washed out after just two hours of play at Headingley. The two sides finished the three-match ODI series on level terms and will have to do it all over again in the three-match T20I series commencing on 27th July, Wednesday.

England have suffered back-to-back series defeats ever since Jos Buttler took over the reins from Eoin Morgan after the latter bid farewell to international cricket in June. Ben Stokes won’t be available for the hosts as he had requested a rest from the series, a telling blow for the English camp.

South Africa, on the other hand, will welcome their bowling spearhead, Kagiso Rabada, back into the squad, and will be led by veteran batter David Miller in the absence of Temba Bavuma. Quinton de Kock looked in phenomenal touch in the final ODI and stroked his way to 92* off just 76 deliveries before the match was called off due to persistent rain. The visitors will be buoyed by his return to form as the southpaw will be crucial for their chances in the T20I series.

England lost their last T20I series against India 2-1 after being comprehensively beaten in the first two T20Is. Meanwhile, South Africa’s latest assignment in the format also came against India in a five-match series which finished on level terms after the fifth match was washed out.

When and where to watch the England vs South Africa T20I matches in India?

The T20I series opener between the two heavyweights will be hosted by the County Ground in Bristol on the 27th of July, and the following match will take place at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff the very next day with both matches commencing at 11 PM IST. The series will culminate with the final T20I being held at The Rose Bowl in Southampton in a 7 PM kickoff on the 31st of July. The matches will be broadcast by the Sony Sports Network and can be streamed online on the Sony LIV app.

Marizanne Kapp ruled out of Commonwealth Games 2022 https://www.crictracker.com/marizanne-kapp-ruled-out-of-commonwealth-games-2022/ Tue, 26 Jul 2022 03:18:39 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=674998 Marizanne Kapp

The South African team has suffered another blow before starting with their Commonwealth Games campaign as their star all-rounder and one of the key players in the team, Marizanne Kapp has been ruled out. She recently left the England tour midway to travel back home due to an emergency situation in the family.

Cricket South Africa had hinted that Kapp’s availability for the Commonwealth Games, which starts this week, was unsure. It was confirmed by the Proteas head coach Hilton Moreeng, after the conclusion of the T20I series, that Kapp would not return back to Birmingham for the global event. England won both the T20I and ODI series by 3-0 and tied the Test match as South Africa suffered a setback before their CWG campaign.

Moreeng refuted that the remainder of the team had been negatively impacted by the absence of numerous senior players throughout the tour.

“It’s sport. These kinds of things happen. Sometimes you have plans as a team, as coaches, as an organization and then players feel that on certain days they’ve had enough,” Moreeng was quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

Kapp played the one-off Test against England and scored a magnificent century, recording a score of 150 (213). She then went on to play the three-match ODI series and claimed 147 runs in the three games. Unfortunately, she had to fly back home before the T20I series as her brother-in-law met with a major accident and was in critical condition in the ICU. Her niece and nephew had also fallen sick while she was a part of the games during her time in England.

“You have to respect and celebrate the times that they had with you because they were incredible cricketers and these kinds of things happen because when you look at where they are in their lives, the different stages of their lives, they have to make at times decisions that are good for them, as people first, before they can worry about anything else,” he added.

We also are a squad in transition, we’re not going to lose sight of that: Moreeng

After the Test match, dynamic batter Lizelle Lee announced her sudden and shocking retirement from all formats of the game with immediate effect amid a dispute over the issuance of a NOC for her to participate in The Hundred, England’s franchise-based unique 100-ball cricket tournament. Shabnim Ismail, a key player in South Africa’s bowling attack, also missed a few games during the tour due to injury concerns.

“So we respect their decisions but at the end of the day it gave opportunities to youngsters to be able to put up their hands. We’re very excited by what we’re seeing. Yes, the results aren’t there yet but we’re taking a lot of things, a lot of homework to be done, because bilateral tours like this give you an indication of where you are as a squad. We also are a squad in transition, we’re not going to lose sight of that. If you look at our bowlers, the ages they’re at, youngsters are going to start coming in. They’ve given us good years,” Moreeng further stated.

Durban based franchise in CSA’s T20 league rope in Lance Klusener as head coach https://www.crictracker.com/durban-based-franchise-in-csas-t20-league-rope-in-lance-klusener-as-head-coach/ Mon, 25 Jul 2022 11:38:02 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=674849 Lance Klusener

The RPSG-owned Durban-based franchise has announced the appointment of former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener as the head coach of the franchise in the newly launched T20 league by the CSA, set to commence in January 2023.

The RPSG group, which also owns IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants announced its first appointment in a statement released on Monday. Lance Klusener is considered one of the finest all-rounders of his generation and featured for the national team in 49 Tests and 171 ODIs between 1996 to 2004, scoring 3576 runs and 192 wickets in ODIs.

After retiring from international cricket, the Proteas cricketer has been part of coaching camps of various teams, domestic and international, including as the batting coach for the Proteas in late 2019. Earlier, he had spent two years with the Zimbabwe national team as a batting coach from 2016 and 2018 and was later appointed the head coach of the Afghanistan team. Klusener’s appointment is not surprising at all, as he was the head coach of the Durban-based Dolphins in the 2010s before joining international teams.

“This is a new challenge for me. It makes me very proud. I am looking forward to meeting the team,” Lance Klusener said in a statement issued by the RPSG group.

IPL franchises wiped out the completions and acquired all six teams of the proposed CSA league

Notably, all the participating six teams of the brand new league have been acquired by IPL franchises. Apart from Lucknow, the owners and co-owners of Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals have bought the remaining teams in the competition.

Previously the CSA had failed to establish a sustainable franchise-based T20 league after the failure of Global League T20 and the Mzansi Super League, and this is their third attempt to re-establish themselves in the global T20 arena. According to the latest reports, the Indian players are less likely to partake in the league, and CSA is likely to allow each team a quota of only four foreign players in the starting XI, similar to the IPL.

England Women have already clinched the ongoing three-match series after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead over South Africa. The Three Lions put up a dominant all-round display in the first two games, giving the visitors no chance. South Africa, on the other hand, will look to end the tour with a win, having lost all three ODIs and the first two T20Is.

In the first T20I, South Africa were put to bat first and only managed to put up 111 runs on board in 20 overs. Laura Wolvaardt starred with the bat, scoring 55 off 49 balls. But the innings belonged to England’s talismanic pacer Katherine Brunt. England’s chase, led by opener Sophia Dunkley, was completed in only 15 overs.

In the second T20I, Sune Luus’s side was put to bat again, and openers Anneke Bosch and Lara Goodall added 102 runs for the first wicket, helping the team amass a total of 148. England chased it down in 19 overs, courtesy of a captain’s knock of 47 from Nat Sciver. From England’s perspective, they would want to finish unbeaten across all formats against their South African counterparts.

ENG-W vs SA-W Pitch Report

The County Ground in Derby is generally a tricky surface for batting. The average first innings total in the T20s on this ground is 133, and it is 106 in the second innings. The highest-ever total recorded here is 166, scored by England Women against West Indies Women. The team winning the toss must elect to bat first since chasing can be precarious on this surface.

‘It’s going to start being tough for players’- Quinton de Kock has a word of caution for multi-format cricketers https://www.crictracker.com/its-going-to-start-being-tough-for-players-quinton-de-kock-has-a-word-of-caution-for-multi-format-cricketers/ Mon, 25 Jul 2022 10:00:40 +0000 https://www.crictracker.com/?p=674763 Quinton de Kock

South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock has come forward and said that it is becoming extremely difficult for leading cricketers to make themselves constantly available across formats in international cricket. De Kock is now only making himself available for selection in the Proteas white-ball setup.

The sudden decision of England all-rounder Ben Stokes to retire from ODI cricket is indeed alarming and it has forced all the modern-day multi-format cricketers to be a bit cautioned. Stokes, who was a flag-bearer of England’s run chase in the 2019 World Cup final, bid adieu to the 50-overs format citing workload concerns and his inability of performing consistently.

Players need to make decisions individually: Quinton de Kock

“It’s going to start being tough for players – three formats is a lot and it looks like more games are happening over the calendar,” said Quinton de Kock while speaking to reporters after the Leeds ODI was washed out due to rain.

“Players need to make decisions individually and if they feel they can do it (play Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 internationals), I am happy for them,” the 29-year-old added. “But guys need to take decisions into their own hands. For me, I am happy where I am,” the stumper added.

Quinton de Kock also decided to sacrifice his Test career just before the birth of his first child. The southpaw made this tough decision after the conclusion of the Centurion Test match against India in December last year.

In the 54 Tests that he played, De Kock managed 3300 runs averaging 38.82 and a strike rate of 70.94 including six centuries and 22 half-centuries. Thus, in order to prolong his white-ball career and in order to devote time to his family, the opener decided to bid adieu to the longest format.

Meanwhile, Quinton de Kock scored an unbeaten 92 in the series-deciding third ODI against England at Leeds on Sunday, July 24. The South African scorecard read 159/2 in the 28th over before the match was forced to be abandoned due to rain. The series was leveled at 1-1.

After winning the second ODI by a comfortable margin and leveling the series, England will now take on the visitors South Africa in the third and final ODI match, to be played at Headingley, Leeds on July 24 (Sunday). Both top teams will be looking to put on a competitive show and win the final match to bag the series.

Despite winning the second ODI, the Three Lions have a lot to think about as they failed to bat their allotted 29 overs during the second ODI fixture. South Africa, on the other hand, also performed miserably with the bat as they failed to even cross the 100-run mark.

Sam Curran:

The all-rounder was impressive with the contribution of 35 and a single wicket in the first ODI but still is a risky pick due to inconsistency in domestic cricket.

Players you should avoid:

David Miller:

The southpaw should be strictly avoided for this game, due to his poor form in the ODI series. He was dismissed for 12 in the second ODI.
